The Supreme Court has suspended its earlier guidelines on the Aravalli ranges. A bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant has ordered the formation of a new high-level committee, which will thoroughly investigate the case. This moratorium will remain effective till the formation of the new committee. The court has issued notices to the Center and four states seeking clarification on the findings of the expert committees. The next hearing will be on January 21, 2026.

A fire broke out in the Tatanagar-Ernakulam Express at Yalamanchili near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. One person died in this accident. Two bogies of the train caught fire, information about which was received at 12:45 am. The deceased has been identified as Chandrashekhar Sundaram. At the time of the incident, there were a total of 158 passengers in both the coaches.
The Supreme Court will again hear the new definition of Aravalli Range by taking suo motu cognizance. Environmentalists are concerned that this definition, based on the 100 meter height criterion, will open up large parts of the Aravalis to mining. A bench headed by CJI will hear the matter on Monday. Earlier the court had banned new mining leases, but now the dispute over the definition has deepened, due to which there is a possibility of serious impact on water and food security.

Priyanshu Raj, a 19-year-old college student in Jaipur's Bagru, committed suicide under stress after being caught cheating in an exam. Manipal University student Priyanshu committed suicide by jumping from the 12th floor of an under-construction building. Tigress PN-224, brought from Pench Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh, has been released in Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan. The tigress, which was brought to Jaipur by Air Force helicopter on December 21, was first kept in the enclosure. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has stayed the construction of an unauthorized ring road passing through the forests of six districts in Manipur. This road was being built without the approval of the state government. Police in Bengaluru have arrested a person named Shubham Shukla on charges of fraud, sexual exploitation and theft. He duped a woman of Rs 20 lakh and 200 grams of gold on the pretext of live-in-relationship. The accused was already married and also allegedly sexually assaulted the woman's minor sister.
