Chandigarh: The process of allotment of land for setting up water plant for hydrogen gas has been completed by the Railway Board. After which the hydrogen train will run on the World Heritage Kalka-Shimla railway track till 2025.

This project is being carried forward under the supervision of the Railway Board itself. Hydrogen fuel is cheaper and pollution free than oil or electricity. Railway Board has selected 3 places to set up a water plant to make gas to run a hydrogen train on the Kalka-Shimla railway track. The use of hydrogen fuel leads to zero emissions of harmful gases and only water vapors are released, which are considered clean and favorable for the environment in the green cover. Railways aims to convert diesel -powered locomotive (engine) into a hydrogen engine, so that green fuel -based trains can be made available.

These train coaches will have CCTV camera, heaters, digital boards, mobile charger points. The engine will be associated with the three coaches.
