Fire in Bhubaneswar supermarket controlled after 21 hours
Jagran correspondent, Bhubaneswar. The fire department brought under control the massive fire that broke out in a supermarket in Lingipur area of Bhubaneswar after about 21 hours of hard work. According to officials, the fire fighting operation, which started on Tuesday night, ended successfully around 4 pm on Wednesday, although smoke continued to emanate from some parts of the building till late evening.
Deputy Fire Officer Narayan Das said that as a precautionary measure, the building has been kept under surveillance and at least one fire brigade will be deployed at the spot until the smoke completely subsides and the premises is declared safe.
Large scale relief and rescue operations begin
Considering the magnitude of the fire, relief and rescue operations were started on a large scale. More than 60 firefighters were deployed to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings, carrying out continuous operations throughout the night and into the next day.
Firefighters had to face many problems in extinguishing the fire. Officials said the supermarket concerned did not have a valid No Objection Certificate (NOC). Additionally, the building had only one entry and exit, making getting inside a major hassle. Seeing the situation, the firefighters had to break the wall and enter inside.
Detailed investigation to check negligence
Although there was a fire extinguishing system installed in the building, it is feared that it was not working. Narayan Das said that a detailed investigation will be conducted to find out the actual cause of the fire and possible negligence in safety standards.
The administration has indicated that further action will be taken on the basis of the investigation report.
