Jagran correspondent, Almora. SSJ Government Medical Sciences and Research Institute (Medical College), Almora is once again in the news regarding ragging cases. This only hill medical college of the state is continuously becoming infamous due to incidents of ragging, due to which questions are being raised on its academic and administrative image.
The first case of ragging in the medical college came to light about two years ago. After this, a similar incident eight months ago in the year 2025 had increased the concern of the college administration. At that time, the college management took a tough stance and called the junior and senior students as well as their parents on the spot and conducted counselling. That matter was closed after mutual consent and agreement.
Came into existence in January 2022. There are 100 MBBS seats in the medical college. Anti-ragging committee was also formed here in the same year of its establishment. Despite this, the incidents of ragging do not seem to be stopping. The recurrence of cases compared to previous years indicates that surveillance and prevention efforts are not being effective at the expected level.
In the latest case, the college administration has decided to impose fine on six students and take preventive action on some. The administration says that this step has been taken with the aim of sending a strong message to prevent such incidents in future. At the same time, parents and student organizations believe that not only action, but also continuous monitoring, sensitization and awareness programs are needed.
At present the question is whether this action will be able to put a complete stop to ragging or the college administration will have to adopt a more stringent and effective strategy. Only time will decide how successful Almora Medical College will be in becoming a ragging free campus.
Counseling of students and parents will be done from time to time. Strict steps are being taken. - Pro. CP Bhaisoda, Principal, Medical College Almora
