Digital Desk, New Delhi. Nepali Congress Party formally split on Wednesday. In fact, the talks between the two groups led by general secretaries Gagan Thapa and Vishwa Prakash Sharma and party president Sher Bahadur Deuba could not reach any agreement.
Thapa, 49, was unanimously elected president of the Nepali Congress Party at a special general conference. The country's oldest and largest party finally split after Thapa and Sharma rejected a last-minute demand for Deuba to resign as party president.
Both the general secretaries urged Deuba to step down from the top post and not contest the upcoming parliamentary elections, so as to play the role of a mentor while respecting the sentiments of the younger generation who lost their lives during the Genji movement in September.
