Martyr's mother Jaswant Kaur covering herself with a blanket (Jagran Graphics)
Daljeet Singh, RSpura. After all, a mother is a mother...how could she let her darling get cold in this harsh winter? How could this old mother sleep at home wearing a quilt? She came out of the house and reached the statue of her martyred son at Rathana Mod (Gurnam Singh Chowk) of RSpura. Tears kept flowing from his eyes and he had a blanket in his hands.
The mother pampered the statue and covered it with a blanket. And she said… At this time, in this cold, everyone is sitting in their homes with heaters installed, in such a situation, how will my son stand in the cold? I am a mother, how can the heart agree? This scene is not just a memory, but a proof that sacrificers never die. Mother's love still stands with her son and Gurnam Singh's sacrifice is immortal like a strong sentinel on the borders of the country.
Sacrifices were made in 2016
On October 22, 2016, 24-year-old BSF constable Gurnam Singh sacrificed his life while protecting the motherland while fighting terrorists at the forward security post Bobiyan of Samba sector. Saluting the bravery of Gurnam, his statue has been built in the square.
Even today, his mother Jaswant Kaur cares for Sepoy Gurnam Singh as much as every mother does for her son. Jaswant Kaur, standing near the statue on Friday, remembering the past days, said that Gurnam Singh was very fond of cold since childhood and was also very fond of covering himself with blankets. He used to get the quilt made in October itself. Even while on duty, he used to call home and get warm clothes and blankets from me.
Father said - Today we don't even have anything to eat
Baidhani's father Kulbir Singh stood silently and kept looking at his son's statue. Both his father's pride and the pain of his broken heart were clearly visible in his silence. Along with this, the pain of the mother and father of the victim was also visible.
Mother Jaswant Kaur said that the square where the statue is installed is very small. Many times, when a car passing by hits the monument, my heart breaks. The square should be enlarged.
Father Kulbir said that when Gurnam was sacrificed, many promises were made to us. My daughter was given a job by BSF, now she is married. But Jammu and Kashmir government did not give anything. A promise of Rs 5 lakh was made, which has not been fulfilled till date. We neither have farming nor anything to eat today. They are living a very difficult life. He thanked BJP MLA Vikram Randhawa and said that it was he who had got the statue of his son built in the Chowk.
'The voice still echoes in the ears'
Mother said that even today the same voice echoes in her ears. The mother's eyes filled with tears again and again while mentioning her son's sacrifice. Amidst tears, he said that the pain of losing his son never subsided, but he was definitely proud of the fact that he gave his life for the country.
Your lion will not be afraid...
Jaswant Kaur told that before the sacrifice, Gurnam called home and told that he has killed the terrorists and he has also received the award for bravery. When asked to take care of himself, he used to say... Your lion will not be afraid. He used to say many times that if I am sacrificed, then my statue should be built in the village square, which the world can see. Name this Chowk as Gurnam Singh Chowk. My gun should be with my statue and my sister should also tie Rakhi to it every year. Jaswant Kaur said that we do the same.
