Digital Desk, New Delhi. On the south-west coast of Australia, a 13-year-old boy did what even highly trained swimmers think twice before doing.
By swimming about four kilometers in the raging sea, he not only reached the shore and called for help, but also saved the lives of his mother and two younger siblings.
13 year old child saved the lives of his mother and brother-sister
This is the story of that brave child, who chose responsibility and not fear in times of crisis. Austin Appleby was paddle boarding in the ocean Friday afternoon with his mother Joan Appleby, 12-year-old brother Beau and eight-year-old sister Grace.
The weather was clear, the sea calm and the atmosphere like a holiday. But within a short time, strong sea winds started blowing and within no time they got stuck amidst the waves several kilometers away from the coast.
The situation was worsening every moment. The mother could not leave the children. In such a situation, he took the most difficult decision of his life. Sent his eldest son Austin to the shore to bring help.
Austin set out first on an inflatable kayak, but it started filling with water. He left the kayak. The life jacket was becoming a hindrance in swimming, so he took it off as well. Without any safety equipment, he jumped into the rough sea.
Four hours, four kilometers and a fight with death
After this the swimming of about four kilometers started. Austin battled high waves for four hours. Without life jacket, without support. The cold water was numbing the body, breathing was becoming labored, arms were beginning to give way. But only one thing was going on in his mind, I have to save everyone.
Later he said, the waves were very big. I was very tired, but could not stop. When I finally felt sand beneath my feet, I fell there. At around six in the evening, he somehow reached the shore and pleaded for help.
On the other hand, mother Joan and the two small children, wearing life jackets and clinging to a paddle board, wandered in the sea for about ten hours. The sun had set, the darkness was getting deeper. The body was shivering due to cold. Still, the mother kept singing and talking to the children to keep them away from fear.
Got life from helicopter
By the time a search helicopter finally located them at around 8:30 pm, they had drifted about 14 kilometers from the coast.
Police Inspector James Bradley said: “The courage and determination of this 13-year-old boy is beyond words. Because of him his mother and siblings are alive today. All four were released after medical examination.
