State Bureau, Shimla. The central government has given big relief to taxi operators. The validity of taxi permit has been increased to 15 years. Earlier this validity was only 12 years. A notification in this regard has been issued by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The states have been informed. This decision of the Center has brought great relief to 70 thousand taxi operators of Himachal. This rule will come into effect from April 1st.

Deputy CM had raised the matter with the Center

Taxi operators of Himachal have been demanding from the state government and Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri for quite some time that the validity of the permit should be increased to 15 years. Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri raised this matter with the Central Government several times. Recently, in a meeting held with Union Road and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, he had discussed it in detail. During this period, he had made the taxi operators aware of the problems being faced. The Center had assured them that a decision on this would be taken soon.

What was the situation before?

Till now the age limit for taxi vehicles was 15 years, while the permit issued to them was 12 years. This caused inconsistency. With the implementation of the new system, the validity of both taxi and taxi permit will be 15 years. Operators will be relieved from the frequent renewal process and the financial burden will also be reduced.

The matter was raised with the Centre, operators will benefit: Mukesh

Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri said that he had raised this matter prominently with Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. He had assured in the meeting that a decision in this regard would be taken soon. There has been success in this. This decision of the Center will benefit taxi operators across the country including Himachal.

Total 24,48,291 vehicles in Himachal

According to Himachal Transport Department, a total of 24,48,291 vehicles are registered in the state. These include 70 thousand taxis. Operators had been raising this demand for a long time. The decision on this had to be taken by the central government. The price of many taxis is around 20 to 30 lakhs. Most of the operators take taxi after taking loan from the bank. Able to repay the bank loan in eight to 10 years. The permit expires when the vehicle starts earning money. Now they will get relief from this.
