Digital Desk, Jammu. Opposition leader and BJP MLA Sunil Sharma objected to the description of Rajouri and Poonch districts as part of the Pir Panjal region and said that there is no such region in Jammu and Kashmir.
After this statement, Sharma has come into controversy in the Assembly. Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather announced the adjournment of the House proceedings amid allegations and debates between the BJP and members of the ruling alliance. However, even after that, leaders of the ruling party and members of Rajouri-Poonch protested against Sharma in the campus.
Speaking to reporters, Sharma said, "There is no such area in Jammu and Kashmir. Efforts are being made to create separate regional identities, which challenges the historical and cultural unity of Jammu and Kashmir." When asked whether he would apologize as demanded by the ruling party, Sharma, avoiding a direct answer, asked where such an area was.
Earlier it was called “Chandrabhaga Division”
He said that historical and mythological context should be taken into consideration as the area was earlier called “Chandrabhaga Division”. He accused some people of trying to “erase or change” the identity of the area by promoting different regional names.
Sharma said that Jammu and Kashmir was a unit created due to the efforts of Maharaja Hari Singh and Sharma described today's areas as his heritage. He said that if there is any reorganization or official name to be adopted then it is the responsibility of the government to do it formally.
Such steps may lead to unnecessary division
The BJP leader also criticized attempts to treat areas like Pir Panjal and Chenab Valley as separate entities. He said that such steps can lead to unnecessary division.
He further said that it is the responsibility of the government to ensure the smooth functioning of the House. Sharma alleged that some parties are working according to their political interests. He also reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir remains an undivided unit.
