State Bureau, New Delhi. Due to adverse weather conditions, NCR cities including Delhi remained troubled with poisonous air on Sunday. The situation was such that out of the five most polluted cities of the country, four were from NCR. Delhi's AQI was recorded the highest in two years in the month of January. In view of the deteriorating air quality, Group 4 restrictions have been imposed in the entire NCR a day earlier on Saturday. At present, there is no sign of much improvement in the situation, however, it is likely to fall back into the "very bad" category on Monday.

According to the air quality bulletin issued by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi's AQI was recorded at 440 on Sunday. It was 400 on Saturday. That means within 24 hours it increased by 40 points. Not only has this been the most polluted day in Delhi in 2026, it is also the highest in the months of January 2025 and 2026. Earlier on January 14, 2024, it was 447.

According to CPCB's Sameer app, on Sunday, AQI was above 400 at 27 of the 37 active air quality monitoring stations in Delhi. The remaining 10 monitoring stations remained in the "very poor" category. The highest AQI recorded in Bawana was 476. In NCR too, the air of Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad was recorded as "severe" while that of Faridabad and Gurugram was recorded as "poor" to "very poor".

According to experts, a layer of smog was seen in the capital on Sunday. Due to low wind speed and temperature, the pollutants got trapped and could not spread from the surface. According to forecasts, the wind is likely to become somewhat stronger on Monday. Due to this, a slight improvement in air quality is possible and it may fall into the “very poor” category. According to the air quality monitoring system, it is likely to remain in this category for the next six days.
