Fatehabad's green model: Now green corridors will be built on vacant land all over Haryana.

Vishnu Nadhodi, Fatehabad. Due to more than 15 thousand saplings planted on the vacant land of the Irrigation Department, the temperature of the departmental premises in Fatehabad is being recorded about 4 degrees lower than outside. This area developed with dense greenery has now become a model at the state level.

The department has decided that afforestation will be done across the state on similar lines on the vacant lands along the canals and irrigation complexes. For this, details of available land from all the districts have been sought from the headquarters. After this, this green corridor will be built on the vacant government land.

This afforestation model is also a guardian of the environment

To understand this model, let us tell you that in the past, plantations were done on a large scale in the rest houses located at Bhuthankalan, Dariyapur, Chimmo, Chandpura and Balliawala of Fatehabad, Tohana Canal Colony and SE Housing Complex.

Then the plants of various species including mango, neem, jamun, pomegranate, kinnow, fig etc. planted here have now become developed trees. The result of this is that due to the dense greenery here, the premises remain relatively cool and the number of birds is increasing.

Plantation has been made a regular activity in the Irrigation Department. Saplings are planted in the campus on occasions like birthdays and retirements of officers and employees.

Now preparations are on to implement this experiment in the entire state. Irrigation Minister Shruti Chaudhary has given instructions to prepare a concrete action plan after taking reports of departmental lands from all the districts. - OP Bishnoi, Superintending Engineer, Irrigation Department, Bhiwani

Know from these facts how important this model will be.

what is the situation now

State with Minimum Forest Cover: According to the India Forest Status Report, Haryana's forest cover is only 1.60% of its total geographical area, which is one of the lowest in the country. Efforts like the Fatehabad model are essential to improve this figure.

Tree cover: The tree cover outside the forest area is about 1,425 square kilometers (3.22%). The plantation being done along the canals strengthens this category.

20% Green Target: Haryana Government has resolved to make 20% of the state green as its long term goal. The ‘Irrigation Department Model’ of Fatehabad is the ground implementation of this vision.

Ratio of 75:25: As per the recent policies of the government, emphasis is being laid on planting 75% shade and 25% fruit/medicinal plants on community and government lands, as done in Fatehabad (Neem, Jamun, Kinnow etc.).
