For the first time, the Agriculture Department is going to cultivate Makhana in Arrah. This is a happy news for the farmers of Bhojpur district, whose crops are getting ruined due to water logging in their fields.

Now they will be able to cultivate Makhana in them. Preparations have been made in this regard at the Agricultural Science Centre. Firstly, Makhana will be sown in three acres of agricultural farm land near Krishi Vigyan Kendra, in which crop has not been grown for the last three years due to water logging.

Blue print ready for Makhana cultivation in seven thousand acres of land

Preparations have been made in this regard at the Agricultural Science Centre. Let us tell you that due to the construction of Agricultural Engineering College in the campus, the drainage route has been closed and crops are being ruined due to water logging.

Scientist of Agricultural Science Center, Dr. Ajay Morya told that there is a plan to increase the scope of production of Makhana. Extensive research is going on and Bhojpur has been selected under the pilot scheme.

According to the data of the Agriculture Department, Kharif and Rabi crops are not being grown due to water logging in more than seven thousand acres of land in the district. Because, that ground is deeper than normal.

Due to this, more than four feet of water gets accumulated during irrigation and the paddy plants rot. Such land is being said to be suitable for Makhana cultivation and the variety is being developed accordingly.

Now Makhana will be sown in those fields. Sabour Agricultural University has prepared a special variety, which can be grown in this waterlogged season of Bhojpur district.

Nursery being prepared in Purnia, planting will be done in February-March

Subject matter expert and in-charge of agronomy, Dr. Ajay told that Makhana seeds will be sown in the premises of Krishi Vigyan Kendra in the coming month of February.

Its preparation is being done in the Agricultural College of Purnia. If workers come from Purnia itself, they will teach the methods of planting and sohni.

After taking training from here, farmers will plant it in their respective low lying fields where crops get ruined due to water logging. It is harvested in September. At that time also trained workers will come and train the interested farmers.
