Digital Desk, New Delhi. You all must know that there is a ban on alcohol in Saudi Arabia, but do you know that the reason behind such a big decision is not just religion, but there is an incident which shook the entire royal family.
This incident dates back to the year 1951, when a Saudi prince murdered a British Vice-Consul, after which King Abdulaziz banned alcohol in the entire country.
The whole story behind the alcohol ban in Saudi Arabia
In fact, this is what happened one evening in 1951 at the Jeddah home of British Vice-Consul Cyril Osman. A young Saudi prince, Mishary bin Abdulaziz, drank too much that evening and began flirting with an English house guest. When Mishari became uncontrollable, Osman stopped him and asked him to leave.
Humiliated and angry, the 19 year old Prince stormed out angrily. The next day, drunk and blinded by anger, he returned to Osman's house and demanded the woman and wine. Once again, Osman refused and tried to throw him out. This time Mishari took out a pistol and fired, killing the Vice-Consul and injuring his wife.
This murder sent a wave of shock throughout the Kingdom. This was not only the assassination of a diplomat, but also a deep insult to the royal family, making it clear that alcohol could endanger both governance and foreign relations. After which King Abdulaziz had banned liquor in the entire country.
