America's new tariff on Indian exports from today
Know the main points and gist of the news at a glance
PTI, New Delhi. An additional 10 percent tariff will be applicable on Indian exports to the US market for 150 days from February 24 (Tuesday). After the US Supreme Court declared the extensive tariffs imposed by the Trump administration illegal, President Donald Trump has signed a new executive order in this regard.
However, there is still uncertainty in the business community after Trump's announcement of 15 percent tariff, as no formal order has been issued in this regard yet. On February 21, Trump had ordered to impose 10 percent tariff on all countries for 150 days from February 24. India is also included in this.
Announcement of 15 percent increase
A few hours after the order was issued, he announced to increase it to 15 percent, but its notification has not come out yet. This 10 percent duty will be in addition to the existing 'Most Favored Nation' (MFN) duty applicable in the US.
For example, if there is a five percent MFN duty on a product, then by adding an additional 10 percent, the effective duty will become 15 percent. Earlier the same calculation was being done by adding 18 percent with 5 percent. If 15 percent is implemented, the total effective duty could reach 20 percent.
It is noteworthy that last week the US Supreme Court had declared the global tariff imposed by Trump under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) of 1977 as illegal and said that the President had encroached on his rights.
25 percent reciprocal tariff was imposed in August 2025
The US had imposed a 25 percent reciprocal tariff on India in August 2025. An additional 25 percent duty was later added due to purchases of Russian crude, bringing the total tariff to 50 percent. Recently, the framework of an interim trade agreement has been agreed between the two countries, under which it has been said that the duty will be brought down to 18 percent.
A meeting of the Indian delegation was proposed in Washington between 23-26 February to give the first phase bilateral trade agreement the form of a legal document, which has been postponed for the time being. Democrat MPs increased pressure on refunds. Three MPs of America's opposition party Democratic Party have demanded to start the refund of tariffs of about $ 175 billion collected from countries around the world after the decision of the Supreme Court.
Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, Congressmen Ed Markey of Massachusetts and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire said on Monday that they are introducing a bill that would require the US Customs and Border Protection Department to issue refunds within a period of 180 days and pay interest on the returned amount.
Higher tariffs will be imposed on countries playing 'game' - Trump
Trump on Monday issued a stern warning to countries that would try to withdraw from recent trade agreements with the US. He said that even more tariffs would be imposed on such countries. Trump posted on Internet media platform Truth Social that countries that try to "game" or take advantage of the United States, which has been taking advantage of the United States for years, will face tariffs even higher than the recently agreed tariffs.
America will stop tariff collection from today, suspense on refund
The US Customs and Border Protection agency (CBP) has announced that it will stop enforcing the tariffs, which were recently ruled illegal by the US Supreme Court, starting at 12:01 a.m. (EST) on Tuesday. CBP said in a message sent to shippers through its Cargo Systems Messaging Service (CSMS) that all tariff codes implemented under President Trump's prior orders related to the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) will be deactivated starting Tuesday.
However, CBP did not clarify why tariff collection continued at the ports for the last few days even after the court decision. Also, the agency has not given any information about possible refunds.
