Aishwarya Iyer, Mumbai. A case of fraudulent theft of a gold ring from a 64-year-old technical officer has come to light in Dadar area of Mumbai. The accused first started talking to her, then forcibly held her hand while expressing his affection and during that time he took out the ring. The incident took place under the Kavi Keshavsut flyover on Tuesday evening.
The victim officer is working in the technical department of Aqua Metro and works in Dadar only. He lives in the officers' quarters of Gandhi Hospital Complex, Parel (East) and is the only earning member of the family.
According to Shivaji Park Police, after finishing duty on February 25, he had gone to Dadar Railway Station area to buy vegetables. At around 8.30 pm, he was walking on foot under the flyover near Sadhguru Trading Company on Senapati Bapat Marg, when an unknown person approached him.
Tried to build trust by calling him 'Raju Bhai's son'
According to the police, the man, aged around 50-55 years, suddenly held the officer's hand and said that he was 'Raju Bhai's son' and started reminding him that he recognized him. Despite the officer's refusal, he continued taking different names and asking questions.
During this time the accused held her hand tightly. When the officer clearly said that he did not know him, he left from there. After some time, the officer came to know that the 5 gram gold ring worn on the ring finger of his right hand was missing. The ring was studded with white colored American diamond and its price is said to be around Rs 35 thousand.
Police registered the case and started investigation
The appearance of the accused has been described as follows: age around 50 to 55 years, complexion fair, body medium, height around 5 feet. He was wearing a blue striped half sleeve shirt and blue pants. Shivaji Park Police has registered a case under Section 318(4) of the Indian Judicial Code and started investigation.
According to the police, such incidents of “distraction theft” keep coming to light due to heavy crowd at Dadar Railway Station and its surrounding areas.
Such cases have come to light earlier also
In the year 2024, an unregistered porter was caught at Dadar Railway Station. He was accused of stealing gold and cash worth about Rs 15 lakh while carrying the luggage of an elderly passenger from CSMT to Dadar. A Western Railway report also states that more cases of theft and robbery of mobile phones and other personal belongings are reported at Dadar station.
Starting a conversation by forcibly showing one's affinity (calling one Raju Bhai's son), trying to create false trust by using different names, maintaining physical contact during a conversation, taking out a ring by diverting attention.
Be cautious of strangers who suddenly reveal their identity. Avoid long conversations or physical contact with strangers in public places. Keep jewelery and valuables safe in crowded areas. Immediately report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
