New Delhi Due to the 8th Pay Commission, which is expected to be implemented from January 1, 2026, there is a possibility of central employees getting arrears worth lakhs of rupees (8th Pay Commission arrears hike). The tenure of the 7th Pay Commission has ended on 31 December 2025 and now all eyes are on the new recommendations. Even though it may take time for the report to come, the probable salary and arrears have started being calculated on the basis of fitment factor (8th Pay Commission fitment factor).
After all, when will the arrears be received?
If the recommendations of the Pay Commission are considered effective from the due date, but the salary increase is to be paid later, then the money for the intervening period is given as arrears. This time it is estimated that the effective date will be considered as January 1, 2026 and there may be a delay of 18 to 24 months in payment. In such a situation, arrears of up to 20 months can arise.
What sport will fitment factor?
Fitment factor is important in deciding the new salary. It determines the new basic pay by multiplying the existing basic pay by a number. Factors under discussion are 2.0, 2.15, 2.28 and 2.57. The larger the factor, the higher will be both the salary and arrears.

How are arrears calculated?
First the new basic salary is decided. Then the monthly difference between the old and new salary is calculated. This difference is multiplied by the months of delay. Along with this the difference of DA is also added.

The Eighth Pay Commission has launched its website and sought suggestions through MyGov portal. Ministries, departments and employees can give their opinion. The government had announced the commission in January 2025 and its notification was issued in November. At present, the employees are waiting to know how much the new salary will increase and when will the arrears be received.
