Nirankar Jaiswal, Jagran Barabanki. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has banned this service after fraud in e-SIM swapping of VIP phone numbers came to light. It is being said that this fraud is being committed in Odisha, Rajasthan and other states by breaking into the software of BSNL. Such cases have come to light in Barabanki, Lucknow, Ambedkar Nagar and Shahjahan. E-SIM swapping of 101 VIP phone numbers was done illegally from the login ID of Mrigendra Kumar Verma, an officer posted in BSNL Barabanki four years ago. Presently Mrigendra Kumar is posted in Sitapur district. This fraud was exposed when the mobile number of Telecom District Manager Azamgarh was also switched off due to e-SIM swapping.

When Barabanki BSNL was investigated on his complaint, this fraud which started from the month of January came to light. In January 2026, 39 VIP numbers and in the month of February 62 VIP numbers were converted into e-SIM. Prima facie, in view of the deficiency in BSNL's software, a case was filed in the cyber police station on behalf of Junior Telecom Officer Ragini Nag.

District Telecom Manager DK Singh said that it is not Barabanki alone, but three such cases have come to light in Lucknow, one in Shahjahanpur and one in Ambedak Nagar. Doubt on the service provider company

Departmental officials say that till December 2025, the Sanchar Aadhaar app, through which this process takes place, was operated by an external company. BSNL is doing this work on its software from January 2026. It is feared that the employees or officers of the former service provider company are involved in this conspiracy.

In view of the continuous cases of fraud in e-SIM swapping, BSNL has stopped e-SIM swapping service from 20th February. Prima facie, this seems to be happening after the service provider company of Sanchar Aadhaar App is gone. The matter is being investigated at the highest level. DK Singh, Telecom District Manager
