Before The Match Against Netherlands, Namibia Captain Appealed To ICC, Made A Big Demand

Big demand for Namibian captain

Lokesh Sharma, Jagran New Delhi. Namibia's journey in international cricket has not been easy, but despite limited resources and fewer opportunities, this team has made its mark strongly. Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus said the biggest challenge is that they do not get a chance to play against big teams regularly. In such a situation, the World Cup held every two years brings a big level change, preparation for which is not easy. At the same time, we are going to face a tough competition from India in the World Cup.

Erasmus explains that to maintain its competitiveness, Namibia plays matches against franchise teams from Zimbabwe and South Africa. Despite this, defeating Test playing teams like Sri Lanka, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Ireland is a major achievement for Namibian cricket. This success has been possible due to the hard work of the players, support staff and people who invest in cricket.

Namibia faces economic problems

Cricket in Namibia is based primarily on school cricket and age-group teams under-13, under-15 and under-19. Only four clubs play at the top level in men's cricket. In recent years, efforts have been made to create academies and high-performance structures, although financial limitations remain a major hurdle. Increased contact with England's county teams and the construction of new grounds have raised hopes for the future.

The popularity of cricket in the country has increased rapidly due to continuous participation in the T20 World Cup. Cricket has now started to overtake rugby in popularity, said Erasmus. Being visible globally on TV and streaming platforms has given cricket a brand identity, increasing audience excitement and stadium crowds.

Erasmus' statement regarding T20 league

Regarding T20 leagues, Erasmus believes that they are very important from the player's point of view. This not only helps in skill development but also makes it possible to adopt cricket as a career. He himself has played in many international leagues including ILT20. He believes that T20 leagues have played an important role in the expansion of cricket in the associate countries. In today's T20 cricket, all teams can compete equally. With the right mindset, opportunity and confidence, teams like Namibia can also make a big impact in world cricket.
