Jagran correspondent, New Delhi. There was tension outside the campus after the JNU Students Union in Delhi announced a 'long march' from the JNU campus to the Education Ministry on Thursday against the Vice-Chancellor.

The university administration informed the students that such outdoor demonstrations were not permitted and asked them to limit the march to the university campus. Despite this the students started trying to go out of the campus.

The police stopped them near the gate, after which a clash broke out between the students and the police. The students have accused the policemen of assault. At the same time, it has also come to light that many policemen were injured. Many policemen including SHO Kishangarh have been taken to Safdarjung Hospital for treatment.

Trying to go out by removing the barricade

At the same time, Student Union President Aditi Mishra, Vice President Gopika K Babu, General Secretary Sunil Yadav, Joint Secretary Danish Ali and former President Nitish Kumar along with their supporters tried to remove the barricade and go out. As soon as the students started crossing the main gate, the police took everyone into custody. About 50 students have been detained so far.

South Western District Police Deputy Commissioner Amit Goyal said that despite not having permission, around 500 students came out of the main gate and started marching at 3:20 pm.

According to the police, the barricades installed to stop the protesters were damaged. During this, the protest turned violent and some students threw banners, sticks and shoes at the security forces. It is alleged that some protesters pushed and bit the policemen. Police officials say that the situation is currently under control and investigation is being done.

The march was in protest against the Vice Chancellor's statement

JNU Students Union President Aditi Mishra alleged that they were carrying out a peaceful march, but people present without uniform dragged them and detained them. Student leaders claim that hundreds of policemen had surrounded the entire campus and were not allowed to come out.

During this, a student got injured in his hand and during detention, a girl student also fainted in the police bus. This demonstration of the students was in protest against the casteist statement of the University Vice-Chancellor Shantisree D. Pandit and to convey their demands to the Education Ministry.

Demand to implement UGC is not appropriate: JNU

Jawaharlal Nehru University administration said that the demand of the student union to implement the UGC rules is not appropriate in the present circumstances, because the Supreme Court has already given a stay order on these rules.

The Vice-Chancellor or Registrar does not have the authority to enforce these. According to the administration, the root cause of the expulsion of the students was the incidents of violence and damage to public property on the campus, which were investigated through the proctorial process. It is highly condemnable that false allegations are being leveled against a woman OBC Vice Chancellor to divert attention from the issue of violence and vandalism of public property.
