Deadly attack on Indian students in Russia, 4 students injured (Photo- Reuters)
Six people, including four Indian students, were injured in a knife attack on a hostel for foreign students at a university in Russia's Bashkortostan republic on Saturday. The Indian Embassy in Moscow confirmed the incident late Saturday night and called it an unfortunate attack.
The embassy said it is in constant contact with Russian authorities to ensure proper medical care to the injured and to obtain information. Officials from the Indian Consulate in Kazan have been sent to Ufa to provide assistance.
The Ministry of External Affairs based in New Delhi has also been informed in this regard. The reason for the attack remains unclear, but Indian officials have reiterated that the safety of students abroad is their primary concern.
Diplomatic sources indicated that the embassy was closely monitoring the situation and would continue to provide updates. According to preliminary reports, a teenager armed with a knife broke into the dormitory of the State Medical University in Ufa, Republic of Bashkortostan. He attacked the students living there.
RTVI.com website quoted Interior Ministry spokeswoman Major General Irina Volk as saying that the attacker resisted arrest, during which two police officers were stabbed. The suspect also caused physical harm to himself. The identities or nationalities of the students have not been released.
The attacker, identified as a 15-year-old teenager, was admitted to a local children's hospital in serious condition, while four students and two police officers were admitted to a local clinical hospital, the 'Baja' Telegram channel said. The Russian Federal Health Ministry said those injured in the attack were undergoing treatment. The condition of one of them is critical.
Authorities in Ufa, the capital of the Republic of Bashkortostan, about 1,200 kilometers east of Moscow, have launched a high-level investigation into the incident.
One channel claimed that the attacker belonged to a banned neo-Nazi organization NS/WP Neo-Nazi. He was raising nationalist slogans during the attack. A picture of a swastika made on a wall with the blood of the victims was shared.
