During a joint press conference in Kuala Lumpur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim talked about the strength and future direction of India-Malaysia relations. Both the leaders said that the relationship has gained new momentum over the years and now it has been decided to further deepen the partnership.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the relations between India and Malaysia are very special. Both the countries are maritime neighbors and there have been deep people-to-people ties for centuries. He said that today Malaysia ranks second among the countries in the world where the population of Indian origin is highest. The civilizations of both the countries are linked by common cultural heritage and democratic values.

New momentum in cooperation

Prime Minister Modi said that India-Malaysia relations have gained new momentum in the last few years and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has made a special contribution in this. Cooperation in energy, infrastructure and manufacturing has strengthened.

Mutual investment in digital economy, biotech and IT has increased. Contacts between tourism and people have also become deeper than before. Inspired by these achievements, it has been decided to give unprecedented momentum and depth to the partnership.

Malaysia went on its first foreign trip in 2026

Prime Minister Modi said he could not come to Malaysia for the ASEAN summit last year, but had promised to visit soon. He said that he has chosen Malaysia for his first foreign trip in 2026, which reflects the trusting relations between the two countries. PM Modi described this visit as a symbol of friendship and partnership.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he appreciated PM Modi's commitment to global peace efforts in Ukraine, Russia and the Middle East, especially Gaza. He said that India's stand on peace support is clear and strong.

As a sign of good relations between the two countries, Malaysia has supported India's decision to open a Consulate in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

Tourism, connectivity and friendship of trust

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said that there is a need to pay more attention to tourism and connectivity. Last year it has seen a tremendous increase. He talked about relaxation in visa and increasing air connectivity, so that both the countries can benefit from Malaysia Truly Asia and Incredible India.

Anwar Ibrahim said that his talks with PM Modi are not formal but based on trust and understanding between true friends.

Emphasis on trade, local currency and education

The Malaysian Prime Minister said that India is growing rapidly in global trade and Malaysia can benefit greatly from cooperation with India in the context of ASEAN. He said that trade between the two countries has reached $18.59 billion by 2025 and now opportunities will be explored to increase it further.

The decision to trade in local currency was described as a major achievement. Emphasizing on education, he said that India's educational institutions have received global recognition and Malaysia will explore possibilities to increase the number of students studying in India.
