Jagran correspondent, Jamshedpur. On Saturday, the administration took action against sleeper buses that were playing with the safety of passengers. During a special checking campaign conducted at Mango Bus Stand on the instructions of Deputy Commissioner Karan Satyarthi, action was taken against 17 sleeper buses violating safety standards.
This joint raid of the Transport Department and Traffic Police was led by District Transport Officer (DTO) Dhananjay, Traffic DSP Neeraj Kumar and Motor Vehicle Inspector Suraj Hembram. The team closely examined the AIS-052 and AIS-119 safety standards prescribed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
Instructions to repair buses as per rules
During the inspection, emergency facilities and construction standards were found to be ignored in many buses. The DTO has issued a notice to the guilty bus owners and issued a stern warning to repair their buses as per the rules within the stipulated time.
If there is no improvement, strict legal action will be taken. Officials clarified that this operation will continue in the future to keep the lives of passengers safe.
It is mandatory to follow AIS standards for safe travel
The Ministry of Road Transport's AIS-052 standards prescribe the robust structure of buses and the design of emergency doors. Whereas AIS-119 is specifically for sleeper coaches, which ensures correct size of berth and adequate width of aisle to facilitate evacuation in case of emergency.
These standards ensure the use of fire retardant materials in buses and passenger safety. Violating these proves to be a big threat to the lives of passengers.
