State Bureau, Lucknow. With Q Filaria Antigen Test (Q FAT) kit, patients of filariasis (elephant feet) can be identified within the day. The Health Department has demanded 2.5 lakh such kits from the Health Ministry, Government of India.
In May 2025, as a pilot project, filariasis patients were tested in the state with this kit, which gave some relief to the health workers from making blood slides at night.
To identify filariasis patients, a blood slide is prepared and tested between 10 pm and 2 am, because the filariasis parasite Wuchereria bancrofti becomes visible in the blood with a glow only at night. It cannot be seen during the day.
In such a situation, health department employees have to set up special camps at different places at night and make slides. Q Filaria Antigen Test: Infection of this parasite can be detected during the day by taking blood samples of patients.
State Malaria Officer Dr. AK Chaudhary said that this technology will make monitoring of filariasis infection easier. In areas where infection is found to be more than two percent, Transmission Assessment Survey (TAS) is conducted. If the infection is found to increase there, the campaign of feeding medicines is continued.
If less than two percent infection is found, then the drug feeding campaign is stopped after the TAS-2 survey. He told that this survey of the World Health Organization is done to stop the drug feeding campaign after the infection in filariasis affected areas decreases to less than one percent.
Dr. Chaudhary said that the state government is also being requested to purchase testing kits through GeM portal. So that the filariasis eradication campaign can be accelerated.
