Trump had imposed 50 percent tariff
There has been tension between India and America over trade tariffs for the last few months. President Trump had earlier imposed import duty of up to 50% on India. In this, a tax of 25 percent was imposed as a penalty for purchasing oil from Russia.
Earlier this month, there was a telephone conversation between PM Modi and President Trump and it was announced to reduce the tariff to 18%. A new draft was released to conclude an interim trade agreement.
Just hours before the US Supreme Court's decision, US Ambassador to New Delhi Sergio Gore informed about important talks between the two countries regarding a trade agreement next week. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal also said that the upcoming talks will help in normalizing bilateral trade relations quickly. But now the situation is again as unclear as before.
