Digital Desk, New Delhi. The use of bomb disposal equipment has increased rapidly in the country. Despite this, there was no uniform and official standard in the country for the testing and quality of these devices. India, for the first time, has addressed this shortcoming by creating a standard for bomb disposal systems.

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has issued a standard for Bomb Disposal Systems named IS 19445:2025.

In this standard, rules have been set to test the ability of devices to protect against the explosion and splinters generated during a bomb blast. Let us tell you what are bomb disposal system standards…

What is Bomb Disposal System Standard IS 19445:2025?

IS 19445:2025 prepared by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the country's first bomb disposal system standard. It has been created on the request of the Union Home Ministry and the Terminal Ballistic Research Laboratory (TBRL).

Why was the standard created?

The purpose of the standards created for bomb disposal systems is to determine how well the equipment used in bomb disposal can prevent the impact of explosion and shrapnel.

Why and for whom is this standard necessary?

BIS has created this standard for the needs of India, because international standards are either very expensive or very limited. On the other hand, they are also not fully compatible with Indian threats such as IEDs, grenades and field conditions. The new standard has been designed as per the needs of the security forces.

Which devices will come under the scope of this standard?

The scope of this standard will be applicable to three major bomb disposal systems.

Actually, these systems are used to stop the impact of bombs.

What is included in the standard?

IS 19445:2025 clearly states the test range requirements. Testing Tools and Setup The entire system, including preparation of test conditions, evaluation criteria, measurement of bomb blast and splinter effects, will now be scientific, repeatable and uniform.

This means that now the entire testing mechanism of bomb disposal system will be scientific, repeatable and uniform across the country.

Is this necessary or option?

It has been said by the government that this standard is for voluntary adoption. Its implementation will bring uniformity in evaluation, quality-based manufacturing and strengthen confidence in bomb disposal systems deployed in critical security operations.
