Ashok Kediyal, Dehradun. Industrial training has been made mandatory for students studying in government universities of the state. Now all the universities will have to enter into MoUs with the industries of different sectors, so that the students can get practical training related to their subject. Under this system, it has also been made mandatory to provide monthly progress report of training to the government.
According to the Higher Education Department, this initiative is being implemented with the aim of promoting skill-based learning in line with the new education policy. The government believes that practical experience, rather than just theoretical knowledge, will enhance the employability of students and enable them to better understand the actual functioning of industries. Along with this, universities have also been instructed to make necessary changes in the courses as per the needs of the industries.
Higher Education Minister Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat said that all state universities will have to coordinate with industries and connect students with skill development. He clarified that the progress of industrial training will be regularly monitored from the government level and action is also possible against the institutions that are negligent in this.

119 colleges affiliated to state universities: 119 government colleges are affiliated to 12 state universities of the state. Of these, maximum 59 colleges are associated with Sridev Suman Uttarakhand University and 54 colleges are associated with Kumaon University, Haldwani. More than 80 thousand students are studying in these colleges, a large number of whom come from rural areas. In such a situation, providing skill based training to these students is being considered especially important.
Industries concentrated in four plain districts: About 70 percent of the industries of the state are located in the plain districts like Haridwar, Dehradun, Udham Singh Nagar and Nainital. It will be relatively easy for universities and colleges in these areas to enter into MoUs with industries. However, connectivity with industries remains a challenge for institutions located in remote hill districts like Chamoli and Uttarkashi. The government will have to consider developing alternative arrangements for such areas.
‘The department is developing a digital portal to make the entire process of industrial training transparent. On this portal, universities will have to upload information related to MOU, training, attendance and progress. This will make monitoring easier at the government level and evaluation can also be done from time to time.
