Wounded leader of Bangladeshi rebellion Hadi dies in Singapore (file photo)
PTI, Dhaka. Sharif Usman Hadi, a key leader of the rebellion in Bangladesh in July last year and spokesperson of Inquilab Manch, died during treatment in a hospital in Singapore on Thursday night. Last week, Hadi was shot in the head by unknown assailants, seriously injuring him.
Addressing the nation, Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus said, “Today I bring before you a very sad news. Sharif Usman Hadi, the fearless frontline fighter of the July Uprising and spokesperson of Inquilab Manch, is no more with us.
Yunus promised immediate action to catch Hadi's killers and declared a day of state mourning. Hadi died hours after his family agreed to undergo surgery in Singapore in a last-ditch effort to save his life.
Protestors condemned the killing
As news of Hadi's death spread, protesters gathered in Shahbag and blocked traffic while chanting slogans demanding justice for Hadi. During the demonstration, protesters raised slogans condemning the killing and accused authorities of inaction.
Meanwhile, Jatiya Chhatra Shakti leaders and activists took out a separate procession from the Teacher-Student Center (TSC) and proceeded through different parts of the campus.
A party office of the banned Awami League was vandalized
An atmosphere of tension prevailed in Rajshahi city after hundreds of students of Rajshahi University (RU) took out a massive protest march. The protests, which started on the university campus, eventually moved to the city centre, where a party office of the now banned Awami League was vandalised.
