Police say that strict action will be taken against those who violate the rules.
Dinesh Mahajan, Jammu. After the bomb blast in Delhi, security agencies across the country are on alert mode. In this series, Jammu Police has started a strict campaign against the vehicles being brought from outside states without getting them registered in their names.
Following the instructions of the Police Headquarters, the District Police and the Traffic Police, in joint action, have seized about 50 such vehicles in the last one month, which were running on the roads in violation of the rules.
Under the Motor Vehicles Act, it is mandatory for any person after purchasing a vehicle from outside the state to get it registered in his name within the stipulated period. Despite this, many drivers were found driving on old registration for months and years. The investigation also revealed that some vehicles were not only in personal use but were also being used in commercial activities, especially taxi operations.
Many taxis with Haryana, Punjab, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh numbers are running in Jammu city and surrounding areas. The owners of many of these vehicles are residents of outside states, who have given their vehicles to run as taxis in Jammu. They are getting economic benefits from this, but from security point of view this situation has become a matter of serious concern.
Jammu and Kashmir is sensitive from security point of view
Jammu and Kashmir has been a sensitive and terror affected area. In such a situation, the possibility of misuse of vehicles from outside states by operating them without proper verification and registration by terrorists or anti-social elements cannot be ruled out. Keeping this danger in mind, the police has started this campaign.
Documents of vehicles are being closely checked at the checkpoints and immediate action is being taken if any violation of rules is found. A clear message has been given to the vehicle owners that if they are driving the vehicle permanently in Jammu and Kashmir, then they will have to change the registration as per the rules. Failure to do so will result in vehicle confiscation as well as legal action.
Security agencies are taking extra vigilance due to Delhi blast
A senior police officer said that after the recent bomb blast in Delhi, security agencies have been instructed to be extra vigilant. In a sensitive area like Jammu and Kashmir, plying vehicles from outside states without registering them in your name can become a serious security threat.
There are clear rules under the Motor Vehicles Act that it is mandatory to change the registration of a vehicle brought from outside the state within the stipulated time limit. Despite this, many people were ignoring the rules. Keeping this in mind, the District Police and Traffic Police have started a joint operation.
