Jagran Correspondent, Agra: To enable patients to get affordable medicines, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on medicines was reduced from 18 and 12 per cent to five per cent in September last year. Based on this, pharma companies had to reduce the MRP of medicines.
But, the MRP of the new consignment of medicines supplied by the pharmaceutical companies has left the drug traders stunned. Pharma companies have increased MRP by 10 percent after reducing GST. Due to this medicines have become expensive.
In September 2025, GST on medicines was reduced to five percent instead of 18 and 12 percent.
After the implementation of the new GST 2.0 system on September 22 last year, GST on life-saving medicines was reduced to five per cent on medicines having zero, 18 and 12 per cent GST.
Media in-charge of Agra Pharma Association, Puneet Kalra said that new MRP medicines have been supplied by the pharma companies. On medicines which had 12 percent GST, the MRP was to be reduced by 6.25 percent if there was 5 percent GST. As the MRP of Eucomelt A (date of manufacture April 2025) was Rs 128.70, the new MRP should have been Rs 120 with GST reduced from 12 per cent to five per cent.

However, the MRP on Eucomelt A manufactured in October 2025 is Rs 132.35. After increasing the GST on this medicine to five percent, the company has increased the MRP by 10 percent, due to which the MRP has increased instead of decreasing. Similarly, MRP of other medicines has also been increased.

Assistant Drug Commissioner Atul Upadhyay said that the maximum prices of the medicines which come under the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) are fixed, it contains salts of more than three thousand medicines including cancer and heart disease, there is no control on the MRP of other medicines. This will be investigated, if companies are charging more GST then action will be taken.
