Former players gave advice to Mohsin Naqvi
PTI, Karachi: After Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) postponed the decision on participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup, former players and former officials of the board have in one voice said that it is fine to support Bangladesh, but it should not be at the cost of national cricket.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has set Friday or Monday as the deadline to confirm Pakistan's participation or withdrawal from the World Cup. This situation arose after Bangladesh was eliminated from the tournament.
Former players raised their voice
Former Pakistan Test captain Mohammad Hafeez believes that the PCB should send the Pakistan team to the World Cup, while former PCB chairman Khalid Mahmood and former secretary Arif Ali Abbasi see no logic in not sending the team. Abbasi said, I can understand that Pakistan is supporting Bangladesh, but apart from spoiling relations with the ICC and member boards, what will the PCB achieve by not sending the team?
Abbasi, who was associated with the board during the tenure of stalwarts like Jagmohan Dalmiya and IS Bindra, said that PCB should send the team for the World Cup. What will happen to our relations with Sri Lanka? Obviously if Pakistan does not go then Sri Lanka will suffer because all our matches including the matches against India are to be held in Sri Lanka.
Mahmood said that the stance of PCB is commendable, but it should show wisdom and keep the interests of Pakistan cricket at the center. We have to remember that apart from Pakistan, no other cricket board supported Bangladesh's demand to remove the match from India. I can understand the stand of Bangladesh Board, but it is also true that they did not get anyone's support in the ICC meeting.
Mohsin Khan and Inzamam Ul Haq appealed
Former batsman and selector Mohsin Khan also appealed to the PCB to send a team for the World Cup. He said, we have issues with India, but we are playing all our matches in Sri Lanka. He said that I have read that the Bangladesh Board will neither appeal nor challenge the ICC decision.
Mohsin warned and said, then on what basis will the PCB not send the team to the World Cup? This will be harmful for our cricket. Former captains Inzamam-ul-Haq and Mohammad Yousuf advised to keep all aspects in mind while taking the final decision. Inzamam said, I want to see Pakistan play in the World Cup. We have good players and our cricket needs good performance from the team in big tournaments.
