Jagran correspondent, Muzaffarpur. The system of the emergency ward of SKMCH, the largest medical college and hospital of North Bihar, has become sick. The situation is such that the equipment for treating serious patients in the ward is rusted. The equipment in the dressing room is not even being sterilized.

There is no provision of sterilized gauze in the dressing room and no scissors. In this situation, doctors and paramedical staff treat serious patients with rusty equipment. In such a situation, there is a risk of infection in the patients who come for treatment every day in the emergency, because these include those patients who come injured for treatment or for dressing after operation.

Most of the equipment being used by these patients for changing bandages, cleaning wounds, cleaning infected wounds and other tasks is old. Also, they are being used without sterilizing. The tables and equipment stands are rusted. Patients are being treated by lying on it. Due to these instruments, patients are at risk of contracting tetanus and other infections. Rusted and bloody instruments are being used on serious patients coming to the emergency room after washing them with saline. The same equipment used for stitching or cleaning wounds of one patient is being used for another patient without sterilizing it.

Even a scissor is not available to cut the thread after stitching the patient. Threads are being cut with BP blade. A sterilization machine was kept for sterilization, but it was thrown away due to technical fault. There are drums for goj, but the goj are somehow being extracted from them.

Most of the goose baggers are being used in sterilized form. A hydraulic dressing table has been kept for the patients but even the sheet on it is torn. There is a rubber seat on the table but there are blood stains on it. Doctors do not wear aprons and paramedical staff and ward boys do not follow the dress code. The relatives of the patient are seen asking each other who is the doctor here and who is the staff. The hospital administration has issued orders regarding this several times, but due to lack of action, the employees are not desisting from their actions.

This equipment is necessary for treatment in emergency ward

It is mandatory to have the necessary materials along with sterilized gauze, dressing material, re-extraction kit, plus oximeter 2, BP equipment 2, section machine 2, one of which is foot operated, emergency tray of medicine, catheter tray, thermometer, Larygon scope, multi para monitor, medical oxygen cylinder, oxygen flowmeter.
