State Bureau, Patna. On Saturday, a new chapter was added to the pulses policy and farmer-centric agricultural discussion of the country from the Pulses Research Center located at Amalaha in Sehore district of Madhya Pradesh.
The nationwide pulse revolution was formally launched through the National Pulses Consultation and Strategy Program organized under the chairmanship of Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan.
In the program, the Central Government presented a check of Rs 93.75 crore to Agriculture Minister Ramkripal Yadav to promote pulses cultivation in Bihar.
Early Pulses Conference in Bihar
Bihar Agriculture Minister Ram Kripal Yadav, who participated in the program, invited Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan and Minister of State for Agriculture Ramnath Thakur to the proposed Pulses National Conference in Bihar.
It may be noted that Bihar aims to become a self-reliant state in the field of pulses production in the next five years. Pulses Self-Reliance Mission is a decisive initiative, under which arrangements for improved seeds, cluster based farming, training, processing units have been made.
Addressing the conference, Ramkripal also placed several demands before the Central Government to increase pulses production. Special cooperation and concrete policy support is required from the central government.
Under the National Pulses Self-Reliance Mission, keeping in mind the geography, climate and agricultural structure of Bihar, it is necessary to approve a special pulses package for the state.
Pigeon pea, gram, lentil, urad and moong should be identified as state-specific pulse crops of Bihar. Also, to strengthen pulses production in the state, there is a need to establish a national level seed hub and provide high yielding, short duration and disease resistant seeds to the farmers with 100 percent central assistance.
Bihar is frequently affected by natural calamities like floods and droughts, hence arrangements should be made for comprehensive crop insurance at low premium for pulse crops and prompt compensation for weather-based losses.
