Jagran correspondent, Angul. Merchant Navy Cadet Sarthak Mahapatra, resident of Kespur village in Bhadrak district of Odisha, has gone missing at sea under mysterious circumstances. He was posted on board EA Jersey, a ship operated by Anglo-Eastern Ship Management. The ship was on its way from West Africa to Singapore when this incident came to light.

According to family and company sources, on February 2, Sarthak had talked to his mother Rasmita Mahapatra on video call. At that time he looked completely normal and healthy. He was seen going towards his cabin at around 6.15 am on 3 February, but when the ship's Chief Officer opened the cabin at 8.30 am, he was not present there.

After this, an intensive search operation was conducted on the ship. The speed of the ship was reduced and a search was conducted in the surrounding sea area, but no trace of Sarthak was found. The matter has been reported to the Mauritius Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) and search and rescue operations are underway at sea.

Family members say that Sarthak's internship in the Merchant Navy was about to be completed and after two months he was to be promoted as Third Officer. The family is in deep shock due to the sudden disappearance of their son. The mother has termed the incident as suspicious and has demanded an impartial and high-level investigation.

Taking the matter seriously, the Odisha government has requested immediate intervention of the Central Government. The state government has contacted the concerned central agencies including the Ministry of External Affairs, DG Shipping, Ports, Shipping and Waterways and demanded to intensify the search and rescue operations.

At present, the search operation is going on in the sea, but till now no concrete information has been found regarding Sarthak Mahapatra. The family and villagers are hoping for the safe return of their son.
