Jagran correspondent, New Delhi. Vande Mataram was declared mandatory to be played and recited as the national song in all government functions, schools, colleges and other important events.

Describing the notification issued by the Central Government in this regard as extremely sad and a decision forcibly imposed on the citizens, Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind President Maulana Arshad Madani said that this is not only a partisan decision, but an attempt to deeply attack the religious freedom of the citizens which the Constitution of the country has provided to them.

He said that now the sad truth has come to light that these people have nothing to do with the progress of the country and the problems of the people, they are in election mode all the time. His every work and every decision depends on how much benefit he can get in the elections.

Maulana Madani said that the controversy over Vande Mataram is very old. Earlier in December 2025, when this issue was discussed in Parliament, we had made our stand clear through a statement.

He told us that we have no objection to anyone singing Vande Mataram or playing its tune in any function, but we Muslims cannot sing this song because we worship only one Allah and cannot include anyone else in our worship.

He also said that the theme of Vande Mataram is based on beliefs related to Shirk and in one of its parts words have been used to worship Durga Mata by likening the country to her.

Maulana said that every religion has its own orders and rules, which no one can stop from following and that is why religious freedom has been given to every citizen in our Constitution under Article 25.

In such a situation, forcing any particular citizen or citizens to adopt, pronounce or follow any particular ideology is a clear violation of the provisions of the Constitution.

Maulana Madani also said that the Supreme Court has also decided that no citizen can be forced to sing the national anthem or any song which is against his religious belief.

He said that love for the country is one thing and worshiping it is another thing. Muslims do not need anyone's certificate for how much they love this country.

The unmatched sacrifices of the Muslims and the elders of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind in the freedom struggle and especially the efforts of Jamiat against the partition of the country are as clear as day.

He said, even after independence, his struggle for the unity and integrity of the country cannot be forgotten. We have always said that patriotism is related to sincerity and action of the heart, and not to slogans.

There is historical record before independence that on 26 October 1937, Rabindranath Tagore advised in a letter to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru that only the first two stanzas of Vande Mataram should be accepted as the national song, because the remaining lines conflict with the beliefs of monotheistic religions.

As a result, on 19 October 1937, the Working Committee of the Congress decided that only its two stanzas should be accepted as the national song. During the whole day's discussion in the Parliament, members of other parties including Congress had emphasized on the same thing, but now an attempt is being made to impose the entire song on the citizens through an order.

Madani clarified that the reason behind this is not patriotism but politics. Whenever the present government is surrounded by any issue, it deliberately tries to create some controversy so that the public's attention can be diverted from the basic problems, the notification related to Vande Mataram is the latest example of this.

In the end he said that this is politics to divide the country. This obsession with maintaining power at any cost not only destroys the peace and unity of the country but also tramples underfoot the Constitution on which the foundation of our country's great democracy rests.
