Know the main points and gist of the news at a glance

Jagran correspondent, South Delhi. India has about one percent of the world's vehicles, but accounts for 15 percent of global road deaths. Helmet is the most effective means of saving life, but only when it meets the safety standards. Last year, about 70 percent of the helmets sold in Delhi were fake. If a safe helmet is a vaccine, then a fake helmet is the same as a fake vaccine.

These things were said by United Nations Special Envoy (Road Safety) Jean Todt as the chief guest at the "Mission: Save Lives on Roads" program organized in Chanakyapuri on Monday to strengthen India's road safety system. He expressed concern over the 38 percent increase in deaths due to bike accidents in the last five years in the capital Delhi. Also appealed to the private sector to provide quality and affordable safety equipment.

Praising India's recent initiatives, he said that now is the time to strictly implement the policies at the grassroots level. Experts called for strict nationwide enforcement and mandatory two-helmet policy on bikes to eliminate India's 15 percent share in global road accident deaths.

At the same time, bike manufacturing companies were requested to compulsorily provide two genuine helmets with each bike at minimum cost. AI based helmet sensor and GPS speed limiter were also proposed to eliminate overspeeding. Rajeev Kapoor, Managing Director, Steelbird Hi-Tech India Limited, said the industry, government and society will have to work in unison to achieve the target of reducing road deaths by 50 per cent.

Sensor control on bike speed

Rajeev Kapoor gave a presentation mentioning the future technologies like AI based helmet sensors which will give alarm unless both the driver and the pillion wear a helmet. There is a GPS based speed limiter, which automatically stops the speed exceeding the prescribed limit. The program featured four major technical sessions that discussed safe junction design, black spot improvement, inclusive and people-centric transport systems, safety of powered two-wheeler users and best interventions under the Safe System Approach. Experts also stressed on keeping the road design in such a way that despite human error, there is minimal loss of life and property in accidents.
