Muddy and smelly water is being supplied to homes in many areas of Chandigarh.
Jagran correspondent, Chandigarh. There are complaints of dirty water supply in many areas of Smart City. People are getting sick due to this. After the death of an eight-year-old girl due to jaundice in Mauli Jagran, public representatives and officers have come into action. Mayor Saurabh Joshi has given instructions to take immediate preventive steps regarding serious problems related to cleanliness and drinking water.
The Mayor said that it is clear from the information received from local residents that the public health situation in Mauli Jagran is very serious. Due to chronically contaminated and irregular water supply, overflowing sewers and poor sanitation, people are facing a lot of problems.
According to people, muddy and smelly water is being supplied to the houses, while sometimes the water remains completely shut off. Doctors in the area have also said an alarming increase in cases of waterborne diseases like jaundice, typhoid and hepatitis. To make the situation worse, it was reported that all three tube wells in the area remained closed for several days, which further deepened the crisis.
The Mayor said that such a situation is not at all acceptable in a city like Chandigarh. He also pointed out that similar complaints are being reported from other areas like Sector 49 and Dhanas, indicating that there is a need for a comprehensive review of the sanitation and water supply infrastructure in vulnerable areas.
The Mayor has given instructions for restoration of water supply infrastructure with immediate effect, thorough cleaning of sewer lines and ensuring alternative arrangements for safe drinking water where necessary. Besides, emphasis has also been laid on providing timely medical aid and preventive measures to the affected people in coordination with the Health Department.
He asked the Municipal Corporation Commissioner to fix accountability and ensure systemic reforms, so that long pending civic problems are resolved in time and do not turn into public health emergencies. The Mayor reiterated that clean water, sanitation and protection of health of citizens should be the top priority of the Municipal Corporation.
The Mayor said that there can be no compromise on the safety and well-being of citizens, especially children. Prompt action, sensitivity and accountability are extremely important to prevent recurrence of such tragic incidents. He has also sought regular reports on the corrective and preventive work being done on the spot.
