The pregnant woman was taken from the loading vehicle to the ambulance, the rough road became a problem.

Digital Desk, Indore. An incident came to light on Monday night in village Arjala of Javra tehsil of Ratlam district, which raised serious questions on both the poor condition of rural roads and the ground reality of emergency health services. Janani Ambulance reached the woman suffering from labor pain, but due to the stubbornness of the driver, it did not reach home. Under compulsion, the family members had to put the pregnant woman in a loading vehicle and bring her about 200 meters along the unpaved road to the ambulance parked near the government school.

23 year old Jyoti Pati Bherulal Suryavanshi, resident of village Arjala, started labor pain at around 6:20 pm on Monday evening. The Asha worker immediately informed 108 Janani Express. The ambulance (number CG 04 NV 6402) reached the village in about 15 minutes, but the driver refused to go to the house citing unpaved road and parked the vehicle near the school.

For about an hour the family members and the villagers kept coaxing the driver, but he did not budge. Ultimately, at around 8 pm, Jyoti was taken to the ambulance in a loading vehicle. She was later taken to Javra Civil Hospital, where she gave birth to a baby girl in the early hours of Tuesday.

Villagers' arguments ineffective, weather also became an excuse

The mother's father, Jujharilal Ajmeria, told that he had brought his daughter from her in-laws' house to Arjala two months ago for her first delivery. More than 25 families live in the new population of the village and hundreds of two-wheelers and four-wheelers pass through this route every day. There is only a 200 meter unpaved road till the house, but the driver refused to take the vehicle further citing bad weather.

According to Jujharilal, the driver even said, “An ambulance cannot come, bring it yourself by bike.” Even when it was told that it was impossible to bring it by bike, he did not agree. The proposal to remove the ambulance when it got stuck in the tractor was also rejected.

On receiving the information, Sarpanch representative Balu Bodana also reached the spot, but despite his request, the driver did not agree. More than 20 villagers gathered at the spot. Ultimately, under compulsion, the pregnant woman was brought to the school in a loading vehicle from the village itself.

Driver's claim: Officer's order

A video of the incident has also surfaced, in which the driver, stating his name as Navdeep Pathak, is seen saying that the authorities have refused to take the ambulance on the unpaved road. In the video, another person present with the driver is also heard advising the villagers to get the road repaired.

Question on neglect of road, complaint in CM helpline

Jujharilal said that the public representatives were informed several times about the bad road, but till date the construction has not been done. She has lodged a complaint about the entire matter in the CM Helpline, so that no other pregnant woman or patient has to face such problems in future.

At the same time, ambulance EMT Mohan Singh Gurjar says that there was a technical problem in the vehicle and due to rain it was not possible to take her inside on the unpaved road, hence the family members were asked to bring the pregnant woman to the school.

Janani Ambulance is operated by a private agency from Bhopal. We will investigate the matter and prepare a report and send it to Bhopal for action against the driver and the agency. - Ashish Chaurasia, District Nodal Officer Janani Express
