According to the legend, a Brahmin woman used to do special worship of the Lord, but she never donated food grains and sesame seeds. By performing puja daily he pleased Lord Vishnu. The Lord thought that the Brahmin woman had purified her body through worship, but how would she get food in Vaikuntha by donating?
In such a situation, Lord Vishnu took the form of a sage and reached the Brahmin. The monk asked for alms from the Brahmin. He gave a lump of earth as alms. After this Lord returned to Vaikuntha world. After this, after some time, Brahmini died and she came to Vaikuntha world.
Brahmini got a place in Vaikuntha world by giving soil in alms, but she did not get any food in Vaikuntha world. Regarding this subject, Brahmini told Lord Vishnu that I worshiped and fasted, but I did not get food in Vaikuntha Lok. After this, the Lord said that you should meet the goddesses of Vaikuntha world and hear the importance of charity on the day of Shattila Ekadashi fast. By observing this fast all your wishes will be fulfilled.
After this the Brahmin observed Shattila Ekadashi fast and donated sesame seeds. According to religious belief, by observing Shattila Ekadashi fast one got happiness in Brahmani in Vaikuntha world. Therefore, sesame seeds must be donated on the day of Shattila Ekadashi.
