Split in NCP over alliance with Jamaat before Bangladesh elections. (PTI)
Digital Desk, New Delhi. The student-led National Citizen Party (NCP) has erupted overnight into an internal split over a proposed alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami ahead of the February elections in Bangladesh. 30 party leaders jointly issued a letter opposing the plan of alliance with Jamaat and two senior members announced their resignation. Dozens of leaders have also threatened mass resignation on this issue.
The NCP's dream of establishing a strong political base ahead of the elections, which emerged from the 2024 student-led protests against the Awami League government led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, appears to be dashing.
Tasneem Zara, one of the key NCP leaders, has announced that she is rejecting the party's candidature and will contest as an independent candidate from Dhaka-9 in the upcoming elections to be held in February next year.
"My dream was to enter Parliament from the platform of a political party and serve the people of my constituency and the country," he wrote in a Facebook post. However, due to the prevailing circumstances, I have decided not to contest the elections as a candidate of any specific party or alliance.
Another senior NCP leader Samantha Sharmin has issued a statement opposing NCP's alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami. “Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is not a reliable ally,” he said. I believe that considering the political position and ideology of Jamaat-e-Islami, any kind of cooperation or agreement with it will force the NCP to pay a heavy price.
US lawmaker condemns 'horrific' murder of Dipu Chandra Das
Indian-American MP Ro Khanna has strongly condemned the lynching of 27-year-old Hindu youth Dipu Chandra Das in Baluka under Mymensingh district in Bangladesh.
He urged the global community to raise its voice against such "despicable acts of hatred and bigotry" and protect the minorities of Bangladesh.
