Farmers' hopes dashed due to land auction of Sasamusa sugar mill, Rs 46 crore outstanding

Manoj Kumar Rai, Kuchaikot (Gopalganj). The dreams of the farmers regarding the re-operation of the Sasamusa sugar mill, which was closed for the last eight years, now seem to be shattered. On the instructions of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI), the process of auctioning the land of Sasamusa Sugar Mill as part of the liquidation process has been started. In this regard, a notice has been issued by the board and detailed information has also been published.

According to the issued notice, the auction process will be completed through e-auction platform on 17 February 2026. The last date for deposit of advance security amount (EMD) for bidders willing to participate in the auction has been fixed as February 16, 2026.

The reserve price for the auction of total 44 Bigha 08 Kattha 07 Dhur land of the mill has been fixed at Rs 66 crore 40 lakh, while the EMD amount has been fixed at Rs 6 crore 44 lakh.

According to the information received, the bankruptcy process against Sasamusa Sugar Mill was started on 17 November 2022. After this, the liquidation action became effective from 20 February 2025. Information related to the auction was published in newspapers on 17 January 2026.

It is noteworthy that Sasamusa Sugar Mill has once been the main center of economic activities in the northern region of the district. Farmers from many nearby blocks including Kuchayakot, Unchkagaon, Panchdevari, Kateya used to cultivate sugarcane as a cash crop and supplied their produce to this mill. The livelihood of thousands of farmers and laborers was linked to this.

In the year 2018, the operation of the mill was affected after the death of seven workers in a horrific accident in the mill premises. After this, the mill was started only for 15 days in the next year, but then it was completely closed. At present about Rs 46 crore is said to be outstanding from the mill to the farmers. Farmers have been facing financial crisis for a long time due to non-payment.

When the farmers got information about the commencement of the auction process of the mill, they started an indefinite protest at the mill gate from 14th December. On December 22, the agitation was ended after the assurance given by Kuchaikot MLA Amarendra Kumar Pandey after meeting the Chief Minister. At that time the farmers were assured that there was a great need of the farmers of Sasamusa sugar mill area and it would be made operational under any circumstances.

However, now that the farmers have received the information that the auction process has reached the final stage, deep disappointment and frustration is being seen among them. Farmers once again seem worried about their future.
