ABVP's allegation regarding the attack
The injured students and some student organizations have alleged that people associated with leftist student organizations arrived with sticks, stones and alleged weapons and attacked common students and ABVP workers.
SOS messages were also shared during the incident, which claimed that a mob of 500-600 people had surrounded the students at around 1:30 am and appealed to call the police immediately.
Why did the fight happen?
It is being told that student politics was already hot in the university regarding the alleged statement of Vice Chancellor Shantishree D. Pandit. The student union had taken out a 'Samata procession' demanding resignation and accountability from the Vice-Chancellor, while the strike of the expelled officials was also continuing. Student leaders allege that the Vice Chancellor made objectionable remarks on a particular section regarding the equity regulation of UGC, which increased the tension in the campus.
Amidst this controversy, it was alleged that some student organizations tried to lock the School of Social Sciences campus, which was opposed by the students studying in the reading room.
After the protest, the argument between the two sides escalated and within no time the matter turned into fighting, stone pelting and violence. After the video surfaced, questions have once again arisen regarding student safety, role of administration and campus politics in JNU.
