Digital Desk, New Delhi. The government told Parliament on Tuesday that the doctor-population ratio in the country is 1:811, which means only one doctor is available for 811 people.

In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Union Health Minister JP Nadda said that there are 13,88,185 registered allopathic doctors and 7,51,768 registered doctors in AYUSH system of medicine in the country. Nadda further said that there has been a significant increase in the number of medical colleges, undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) seats in the country.

Number of medical colleges increased in the country

The minister said that since 2014, the number of medical colleges has increased from 387 to 818, UG seats have increased from 51,348 to 1,28,875 and PG seats have increased from 31,185 to 82,059. He said the government has taken several steps to improve the availability of doctors in deprived, rural and tribal areas.

Matters related to heart attack are not kept at the central level.

Whereas, in response to another question, JP Nadda said that data related to heart attack cases is not maintained at the central level. According to ICMR, to understand the causes of heart attacks, ICMR-National Institute of Epidemiology (ICMR-NIE) has conducted a study in 25 hospitals across the country. He said that in these cases, information has been collected about patients aged 18 to 45 years admitted in hospitals from October 2021 to January 2023.

Cough syrup manufacturers were thoroughly audited

In view of the deaths of children due to consumption of contaminated cough syrup, a thorough audit of more than 700 cough syrup manufacturers was conducted and market surveillance of syrup formulations was increased by central and state drug regulators.

Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel, in a written reply, said that on receiving reports of child deaths in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, a central team of experts visited Chhindwara and Nagpur and conducted a detailed investigation of the reported cases and deaths in coordination with Madhya Pradesh state authorities.
