Modi cabinet approves change of name of Kerala
The Union Cabinet, in a meeting held on Tuesday, approved the Kerala government's proposal to change the name of the state. This decision is the first taken at Seva Teerth, which is the newly constructed Prime Minister's Office and Cabinet Secretariat Complex. The move comes after a resolution was passed unanimously in the Kerala Assembly on June 24, 2024, appealing to the Center to change the First Schedule of the Constitution to reflect the name 'Keralaam'.
The Assembly had earlier passed a similar resolution in August 2023, but the Home Ministry suggested technical changes, due to which the state had to again bring a new resolution with improvements.
Kerala is called 'Keralaam' in Malayalam - Vijayan
After presenting the proposal, CM Pinarayi Vijayan had said that the state is called 'Kerala' in Malayalam and the demand for a Kerala for Malayalam-speaking people has been going on since the country's freedom struggle.
Vijayan had said, “The name of our State is written as Kerala in the First Schedule of the Constitution. This Assembly requests the Center to take immediate steps to change it to ‘Keralam’ under Article 3 of the Constitution and to change its name to ‘Keralaam’ in all the languages specified in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.”
The proposal sought changes in the first schedule under Article 3. Upon review, it was revealed that changes would be required in the First Schedule of the Constitution. Assembly elections are expected to be held in the state in April-May.
