Know the main points and gist of the news at a glance

Digital Desk, New Delhi. The US Supreme Court has declared the sweeping emergency tariffs imposed by President Trump illegal. After this decision, the name being discussed the most is Rick Woldenberg, who reached the Supreme Court against Trump's aggressive tariff policy.

Indeed, amid the blow of tariffs and supply chain uncertainty, Learning Resources CEO Rick Woldenberg has led a historic legal battle. Rick Woldenberg challenged the Trump administration's use of the IEEPA law, arguing that these policies are a threat not to big companies but to middle-class industries that have been around for generations.

Who is Rick Woldenberg?

Rick Woldenberg, who challenged Trump's tariffs, runs a family toy company in Chicago. His company was founded by his mother. Within days of the Trump administration's announcement of the 'Liberation Day' tariffs, they contacted lawyers and filed a lawsuit against the US President.

He had argued in court that tariffs are hurting small and mid-sized businesses the most, while larger companies protect themselves through lobbying and resources.

Why did Rick Woldenberg take such a step?

Woldenberg's company makes most of its educational toys in Asia. Tariffs under the IEEPA law imposed by the Trump administration led to a sudden increase in costs and the company's chances of incurring losses.

Due to which Woldenberg stopped new recruitment for the warehouse project. Not only this, his company also had to cut the marketing budget. After the tariffs imposed by Trump, they realized that the company would become smaller and earn less, and that is what happened.

The biggest impact on Woldenberg's company was the popular product 'BubblePlush Yoga Ball Buddies'. Due to fluctuating tariff duties, his company was once forced to shift production to different countries like 'refugees in India'.

This problem was not only for his company but also for other American companies. But big American corporates stayed away from this legal battle. According to experts, big companies have cash reserves and supply chain management capabilities, so they focus on lobbying instead of going directly to court.

What was the argument given in the Supreme Court?

Dozens of small businesses and some nonprofit organizations stood with Woldenberg. The companies argued in court that the 1977 IEEPA Act does not allow the President to impose tariffs. America's lower courts had also declared Trump's tariffs a violation of the law.

According to Rick Woldenberg, his legal fees related to this case reached millions of dollars, but he considered it important. Woldenberg is the only businessman among millions of American businessmen who took the risk of fighting the case against President Trump on his own. Although there are many names in this list, but Woldenberg is the most special among them.
