In BMC with 227 seats, 114 votes are required to elect the mayor. Mahayuti can easily cross this figure. But, the opposition may also enter the mayor's race.
Uddhav Thackeray's party Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut has indicated this. He claims that the opposition is just 6 steps away from majority. That means, with the support of 6 councilors, the entire game of BMC can change and the opposition can get the mayor's chair.
According to Sanjay Raut,
We currently have 108 seats. The target is 114. We are lagging behind by just 6 seats. Anything can happen in Mumbai politics.
What is the mathematics of seats?
In the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, BJP has got 89 seats and Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena has got 29 seats. The Mahayuti alliance has won a total of 118 seats and only 114 votes are needed to elect the mayor. But, there has been a twist in the story.
Shiv Sena (UBT) has got only 65 wards in the elections. Sanjay Raut says that including all the parties of the opposition alliance, this figure is reaching 108. In such a situation, with the support of 6 councilors, the opposition can also reach the alliance.
How many seats does the opposition have?
Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) had also formed an alliance with Shiv Sena (UBT). MNS has won 6 seats. Apart from this, Congress along with Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi has won 24 seats.
At the same time, Asaduddin Owaisi's party AIMIM has won 8 seats. Samajwadi Party has got 2 seats, Ajit Pawar's NCP has got 3 seats and Sharad Pawar's NCP has got 1 seat. Deputy CM Ajit Pawar is part of the Mahayuti alliance, but had decided to contest the BMC elections separately.
