Soban Singh Gusain, Jagran Dehradun: Amidst the increasing use of digital transactions, internet media and online services, cyber fraud has emerged as a big challenge. To control these, the positive effect of people's vigilance including the messages and awareness campaigns given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been seen.

This year there has been a relative decline in the cases of cyber fraud. In the year 2025, 24442 complaints related to cyber fraud were registered, out of which the fraudsters committed cyber fraud worth Rs 117 crore. Due to awareness, the victims immediately contacted toll free number 1930, due to which Rs 27.2 crore was saved.

In the year 2024, there were 25,000 complaints of cyber fraud in which cyber fraud worth Rs 220 crore was done, while in the year 2023 there were 21 thousand complaints in which the fraudsters committed cyber fraud worth Rs 55 crore. 80 percent of the fraud money reached China, Pakistan, Cambodia and Vietnam.

Decrease in digital arrest cases

In the year 2024, cyber thugs adopted a new method of cheating, that was digital arrest. Some suspicious item in the courier, which contained fake passports, drugs and links with big criminals, scared people and in the name of checking their accounts, they cheated them to the tune of Rs 20 lakh to Rs 4 crore.

The thugs introduced themselves as officers of the Mumbai Police Crime Branch and showed the threat of arrest to scare them. Due to fear of arrest, people fell prey to the fraudsters and transferred their entire life savings to the accounts of cyber fraudsters. However, in the year 2025, the cases of digital arrest reduced to eight.

Catching cyber thugs is a big challenge

Only through awareness can the cases of cyber fraud be reduced. However, there has been a decrease in the cases of cyber fraud in the year 2025 as compared to the year 2024. This year, more cases of fraud in the name of investment were seen. Some people give up their life's earnings due to small greed. In such a situation, before investing online, definitely find out its authenticity. - Navneet Bhullar, SSP, STF
