Unseasonal storm, heavy rain and hailstorm caused widespread devastation in Subarnapur, Odisha.

Jagran correspondent, Angul. Unseasonal storm, heavy rain and hailstorm that came on Monday evening in Binika area under Subarnapur district of Odisha caused widespread devastation. At around five in the evening the weather suddenly changed and it started raining heavily with strong winds. The hail that fell within a short time affected the fields and residential areas.

Due to the strong wind, roofs of many kutcha houses were blown away, trees were uprooted and fell on the roads and electric poles and wires were damaged at many places. Due to this, power supply was disrupted in many villages till late night.

Vegetable crops suffer the most damage

Vegetable and pulse crops prepared in the fields were ruined due to hailstorm. Tomato, brinjal, chilli and other vegetables have been heavily damaged. According to the farmers, crops grown in several acres were completely destroyed, due to which they will have to suffer huge financial losses. The farmers have demanded the administration to conduct a survey immediately and give compensation.

After the incident, teams of revenue and agriculture departments reached the affected villages and started preliminary assessment of the damage. Officials said that a detailed report will be prepared and sent to the state government, so that relief can be provided to the affected families.

It is noteworthy that the India Meteorological Department had already issued a warning regarding the possibility of rain with thunder, strong wind and hailstorm in many districts of the state. The department had also advised people to remain alert and stay in safe places during bad weather. Despite this, the sudden strong storm and hailstorm caused massive damage.

The Meteorological Department has predicted similar weather conditions to persist in some parts of the state for the next 24 to 48 hours. The administration has appealed to the people to remain alert and inform the local authorities in case of any emergency.
