Model ponds will be free from gray water and plastic

Digital Desk, Lucknow. The Yogi government of Uttar Pradesh has taken a revolutionary step to give a modern and clean look to the traditional ponds of the state. Giving priority to environmental protection and rural health, the government has decided to develop 100 ponds each as 'model ponds' in all the districts of the state. These ponds will not only be free from plastic and grey-water (dirty water from kitchen and bath), but will also prove helpful in preventing mosquito-borne diseases by improving the quality of water.

'My pond is my responsibility' campaign started

On the instructions of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Panchayati Raj Department has prepared a detailed action plan for this scheme, which will be operated under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Rural). This campaign has been named ‘Mera Talab Meri Responsibilty’, the main objective of which is to make the rural community accountable towards water sources. Guidelines in this regard have been issued by the Director of Swachh Bharat Mission (Rural) to all the District Panchayat Raj Officers of the state.

First phase: Special focus on big villages

The first phase of the scheme targets villages whose population is more than 5000. By selecting ponds here, it will be assessed as to how much dirty water and plastic waste of how many families is falling into the pond every day. For scientific investigation of the improvement of the ponds, the BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) level of their water will also be measured, so that after the construction of the model pond, comparative data of water purity can be obtained.

Bio-filter and no-plastic zone strategy

According to District Panchayat Raj Officer Nilesh Pratap Singh, 'No Plastic Zone' will be declared around the selected ponds and a proposal to not throw garbage will be passed through Gram Panchayats. At the technical level, 'plastic trap' nets and filter chambers will be installed on the drains falling into the pond. Also, to purify the grey-water, a 'bio filter system' consisting of sand, pebbles and weed plants like 'Kelhi and Kena' will be installed at the end of the drain, due to which the water will enter the pond after being naturally cleaned.

Conclusion: The village would be enriched with clean water

Development of ponds in model form will improve ground water recharge and irrigation facilities in rural areas. By having plastic-free and clean water, not only will biodiversity be preserved, but by controlling the breeding of mosquitoes, a positive change will also be seen in the health of the villagers.
