Saryu canal could not be closed even after three days, fields filled with water
Due to the indifference and negligence of the departmental officials of Saryu Canal Project, hundreds of acres of wheat crops of the farmers got submerged. The Saryu canal between Baunpar and Pichhaura in Gagaha area broke on Saturday night, due to which the surrounding fields were flooded and the crops were completely ruined.
When farmers reached their fields on Sunday morning, instead of crops they saw water everywhere. Farmers were surprised to see fields filled with water without rain. When we went near the canal and looked, the canal was found broken. This information was immediately given to the higher officials, but despite a lot of efforts, the canal could not be closed for the second day on Sunday. The canal water continued falling into the fields till Monday morning. It was fortunate that the flow of water in the canal reduced, otherwise the fields as well as the houses of the villagers could have been flooded.
Farmers say that the Saryu Canal Project was started after a lot of struggle, but it has become a curse for them. The canal has been continuously breaking for the last three years. Whenever water is released into the canal, every year it breaks somewhere and farmers' crops get drowned. After this the farmers are pacified only by giving assurance.
Farmer leader Dilip, social worker Ranjit Singh, Pankaj Tiwari, Kamlesh Gupta, Upendra Mishra, Harikesh Gupta and others demanded that water should not be released in the canal from Baumpar to Pichora until it is made concrete. He also demanded proper compensation for the submerged crops. In this regard, Sub Divisional Officer Dhirendra Kumar Singh said that the broken canal has been dammed.
