A solution to the 30-second traffic light jam at Majnu Ka Tila has been found. Awakening
V.K. Shukla, New Delhi. The 30-second traffic light installed in front of Majnu Ka Tila Gurudwara on Ring Road to allow pedestrians to cross the road is causing long traffic jams during peak hours. The plan to build a foot overbridge here was stalled for many years due to technical difficulties. Now its solution has been found.
Work on this project will start in a few months
The Public Works Department (PWD) has made a slight change in the design and now a part of the foot overbridge will be lowered onto the Municipal Corporation Park on the other side of the Gurudwara. PWD has approved giving ₹3.7 million to the Municipal Corporation for this. It is expected that work on this project will start in the next few months.
Due to heavy traffic jam near Majnu Ka Tila on Outer Ring Road, in 2020, traffic lights were removed by making one U-turn after another. This reduced the jam. However, as there was no crossing arrangement for pedestrians, a 30-second traffic light was installed there.
Meanwhile, the High Court on August 11, 2020, ordered the construction of a FOB at this junction to deal with the traffic jam. The eastern end of this FOB (Stairs and Lift) was to be built near the existing PWD drain. However, when the work started, the DDA stopped the work saying that it was being done on their land without prior permission.
DDA gave approval for the project
This dispute stopped the work. In 2024, this case will be filed before LG V.K. Saxena, and on his instructions, the DDA cleared the land for the project.
According to the plan, the FOB on the PWD road in front of the Gurudwara was to be designed and built in such a way that whenever a flyover was built at this junction, it could be easily removed and installed at another place. However, when work began in 2025, it was discovered that there were large underground water and sewer lines passing through the area where the footover bridge was to be lowered.
Therefore, it was decided to build this part on Municipal Corporation land. 200 square meter land will be taken. The Public Works Department (PWD) will pay ₹37,94,821 to the Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) towards the land cost and development fees. The government has approved it. It is believed that the process of payment will be completed by the end of this month, and the footover bridge is expected to be ready within a year.
Stopping the vehicle even for 10 seconds on the main road leads to traffic jam. If the vehicle stops for 30 seconds, the probability of traffic jam increases by 400 to 500 metres. In such a situation, removing red light will provide relief to many people in future. People will save both fuel and time.-Anil Chhikara, Transport Expert and former Transport, Deputy Commissioner, Delhi Government.
